It may be tight. Use a rubber mallet on the top of the shaft to loosen it.
On a bowl-lift model, the beater shaft is part of the planetary assembly. The entire planetary unit can be removed by unscrewing the retaining ring that holds it to the gear housing. The retaining ring is a large threaded ring.
Use a pair of snap ring pliers or a large screwdriver to turn it.
Once the planetary is out, you can clean it thoroughly. The planetary has a set of balls that roll in a race. Those balls need to be packed with grease.
Don’t forget to apply fresh grease before reassembly.
Cleaning and Reassembly Tips
Now that everything is apart, take the opportunity to clean the mixer’s exterior and interior. Use a damp cloth on the painted surfaces. Avoid getting water into the motor windings.
The motor itself should be dry, you can blow out dust with compressed air.
Check the motor brushes. They are located on the sides of the motor. They should be at least ¼ inch long.
If they are shorter, replace them. Brushes are cheap and easy to swap.
Reassembly is the reverse of disassembly, but there are a few tricks.
